ROTARY CLUB OF BURNABY DEER LAKE

DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY Entrance Scholarship

To be eligible for entrance scholarships, students must:
  • be applying for admission to Dalhousie direct from high school
  • have a complete application for admission on file as of March 15
  • have a minimum 85% admission average* (80% for students from high schools within Atlantic Canada), unless otherwise stated. An admission average is calculated based upon the five required courses for the program to which the student has applied

Dalhousie has TWO main types of entrance scholarships:

  1. grades based (automatic consideration)
    A. Regular academic curriculum
    B. International Baccalaureate curriculum
  2. those that consider factors in addition to grades, i.e. financial need and/or leadership or volunteer experience (application required)

Shad Valley renewable scholarships

Two renewable scholarships of $16,000 ($4,000 per year) are offered to top high school applicants who have participated in Shad Valley. Students are automatically considered if indicated on application or contact the Assistant Registrar, Awards to be considered. Minimum 80% admissions average with complete application for admission by March 15.

2. Scholarships requiring a separate application

The scholarships listed below require a separate application. Students receive these scholarships in addition to grades based scholarships. A minimum 80% admissions average (regardless of citizenship) OR 28 predicted/anticipated IB Diploma points, as of March 15, is required to be eligible for these scholarships.

Bissett Scholarship (renewable) - 1 available
  • Value: $24,000 ($6,000 per year)
  • Open to: Applicants from Cole Harbour High School, N.S.
  • Deadline: March 15
  • Interested students should contact the Cole Harbour Guidance Office.
Dalhousie Alumni Leadership/Association Scholarships - several available
  • Value: between $1,000 and $2,000 each
    Open to: Canadian citizens or permanent residents AND international high school applicants
  • Deadline: March 15
  • Details: Candidates must have played a leadership role in extracurricular activities such as community service, student government, athletics, or the visual or performing arts.

General Entrance Award Application - over 200 awards available
  • Value: Range from $4,000 to $80,000 over four years
  • Open to: High school applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
        Exceptions:
        -

        - Bermudian citizens are eligible for the Jeff D. and Martha Edwards Scholarship.

$800 LOVISON FAMILY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is meant to encourage and support young people of the Catholic faith who strive for excellence in post-scondary education. Applicants must be Catholic and have a 3.0 (B) average or higher and plan to attend university, community college, or technical institute.  Additional criteria: evidence of strength of Christian character, a proven track record of community serivce; and  sportsmanship and team building qualitites. BCSSA SCHOLARSHIPS- Technology & Teaching

Interested in technology? or becoming a teacher? These 2 scholarships are for you! The BCSSA Apple Technology Scholarship and the BCSSA Grade 12 Essay Scholarship program are now available!

The BCSSA and Apple Canada invite students in grades 6–12 to design a website for an opportunity to receive a scholarship prize of an Apple MacBook. 

The Grade 12 Essay Scholarship provides financial assistance to students planning to pursue a teaching career.  The winner will receive $1000, and the five finalists will receive $200 each. In addition to submitting an essay (1000 words maximum), applicants must provide a transcript of grades and two letters of reference attesting to school/community leadership. The topic for the 2010 Grade 12 Essay Scholarship is "Personalized Learning in the 21st Century. How should schools address the learning needs of students for the next generation?"

$25,000 SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Are you creative? interested in Science? Then this is the scholarship for you! $5000 UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA BUSINESS Scholarship

Thanks to the generosity of Black Press, 37 high school students from across BC will receive $5,000 to study business at the University of Victoria. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic merit, leadership and a demonstrated desire to make a positive difference in the world. BC ABORIGINAL STUDENT AWARDS



Thinking about continuing your education or looking for some financial help to kick off your studies?  Check out the BC Aboriginal Student Award.  Awards of $1,000 - $3,500 will be awarded to Aboriginal students enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies at least nine weeks long.  You could be one of them! The Program is open to BC residents of Aboriginal ancestry who have been active in their school or community and are planning to study in:

  •         An approved trades training or apprenticeship program,
  •         A certificate or diploma program  or
  •         An undergraduate or graduate degree  program.

SHAMIN JEWELLERS AWARD FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL EXCELLENCE

Are you interested in Business and are taking Business courses at Central? This is the award for you! There can only be one recipient per high shcool and the recipient will receive a diamond watch and $250 cash.
CRITERIA:
  • excellent communication skills
  • above average grades in business courses e.g. Marketing, Accounting, Business Admin, Economics etc. (provide a transcript)
  • involved in business or related clubs within the school
  • shown leadership in taking inititative in causing positive change within the school or community
NOT REQUIRED but could help support the application:
  • involved in school fundraising activities, tickets/product sales, newsparer sales or retail sales (e.g. school store), debating and/or public speaking.

MILLER THOMSON NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

The foundation will award 100 entrance scholarships of $3000 to students who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, have made a positive contribution to their school thorugh extracurricular activities and have made a significant contributions of time and energy to community service programs. Students must have a minimum of 87%  overall grade average. Students planning to attend a post-secondary insititution in Canada leading to a degree or diploma from a college or university are eligible to apply. SFU ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP

A  reminder to all Grads with a 90% average or better to apply for the SFU major entrance scholarship. You have nothing to lose and $34,000 to gain! 
What to do:

  • complete and sign application form
  • get one completed nomination form (available at students.sfu.ca/entrancescholarships) 
  • get one reference letter. These two documents must not be from the same referee. At least one referee should be a teacher who knows you well.
  • ensure both referees are able to base their reference on direct knowledge about you. Your reference letter should include comments on your rank in class, your abilities in comparison to students your referee has known, your volunteer/extracurricular activities, and their assessment of the contribution you will make to SFU both inside and outside class. (Include this information in the request for reference letter sheet (available on school website) you give to your teacher)
  • complete a one page summary of your achievements and activities, in a table with the following headings: The organization, club or extracurricular activity in which you were involved, the position you held, the duration of that position, the number of hours you spent with that group, a brief description of tasks and responsibilities.
  • Provide clear and concise details about your volunteer work, school or community involvement, extracurricular activities, and artistic or athletics interests. In addition, describe in one paragraph your most important volunteer work or community involvement and why it was important to you. 
  • write a 900 word essay on one of Douglas Coupland’s quotes (see quotes in brochure link below)
  • include 2 copies of your transcript that includes your grade 11 and 12 course marks to date. 
  • for new Canadians, a copy of your citizenship or Canadian permanent resident documents.

SOUTH BURNABY METRO CLUB ATHLETIC BURSARIES

The South Burnaby Metro Club offers Grads  3 -$500 bursaries (one for each sport division). Humanity Award for REFUGEE students

The BC TEAL Charitable Foundation Humanity $2,800.00 Award recognizes a student graduating from a BC secondary school who has come to Canada as a refugee and who has shown courage and determination while adapting to a new language and culture in Canada.The student must use the award for post-secondary education at a BC institution.



CRITERIA: 
1.  Grade 12 student who arrived in Canada as a refugee and who wishes to attend a post-graduate institution in BC 
2.  Consistent improvement in academic competence 
3.  School/community involvement and/or service to others 
4.  ESL coursework at the secondary level (Grade 8 or higher)

Michael J Fox Theatre, Visual and Performing Arts Scholarships

Are you involved and talented in Directing, Theatre, Art, Dance, Music, Media Arts, Stagecraft? Then this is the scholarship for you!

You must:
  •  be currently enrolled in a visual or perfomring arts course in a Burnaby School.
  • provide evidence of financial need and explain why there are no other financial resources avaialble to you
  • provide a history of your school and/or community involvement  e.g. school productions, student government, choir memeber, volunteer work, charity work, service clubs
  • provide secondary school transcript that shows grades are high enough for acceptance to post-secondary schools and that you have an aptitude for the arts discipline you hope to pursue
  • pursuing study at a post-secondary school in an arts or arts-related area
